How does a ZLD treatment system work?

Specific treatment processes vary, but a typical Zero Liquid Discharge treatment facility process will usually include the following steps:

Pretreatment and conditioning 

Pretreatment is used to remove simple things from the wastewater stream that can be filtered or precipitated out, conditioning the water and reducing the suspended solids and materials that would otherwise scale and/or foul following treatment steps.

Out of this process comes a liquid that is then filter-pressed into a solid, resulting in a solution much lower in suspended solids and without the ability to scale up concentration treatment.

Phase-one concentration 

Concentrating in the earlier stages of ZLD is usually done with membranes like reverse osmosis (RO), brine concentrators, or electrodialysis.

Evaporation/crystallization

After the concentration step is complete, the next step is generating a solid, which is done through thermal processes or evaporation, where you evaporate all the water off, collect it, and reuse it. Adding acid at this point will help to neutralize the solution so, when heating it, you can avoid scaling and harming the heat exchangers.

Recycled water distribution/solid waste treatment

Asymmetric rotating Disk Contractor (ARDC)

The column consists of an asymmetrically located mixing zone and transfer-settling zone removed from each other by means of a vertical baffle. The transfer-settling zone consists of a series of compartments, separated by means of annular horizontal baffles.

Its design is aimed at retaining the efficient shearing action of the rotating disc counter by using rotating disks to produce dispersion while using the coalescence re-dispersion cycle produced in the separated transfer-settling zone to reduce back-mixing.

Centrifugal extractor (CE)

A centrifugal extractor has an annular mixing chamber and a basket for phase separation. This operation at relatively high speed promotes intensive mixing in the annular space where the two immiscible phases quickly reach equilibrium. The mixture enters the inner volume of the rotating basket where high centrifugal force quickly separates the two phases. The extract and raffinate are discharged through different outlets. For finer separation, multistage extraction may be used.
